What to do now

Baby Sleep Bags sold on Amazon could block a child’s nose and mouth or restrict breathing.

  1. Take it out of the cot or pram now, and put your baby to sleep on their back on a firm, flat surface.
  2. Keep it away from babies and young children.
  3. The marketplace has removed the listing. Contact the seller through your order history to ask for a refund.
  4. Report it to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer service if the seller does not respond.

Why it matters. Babies cannot move away from something covering their face. Pillows, padded sleeping bags and soft items in the cot are linked to sleep deaths, and that is why many of these products fail UK safety rules.

Summary

Product Safety Report for baby sleep bags presenting a serious risk of suffocation, overheating and death.

The risk

The sleep bag presents a serious risk of suffocation, overheating and death as it has a head covering. This breaches the clause in the relevant standard, BS EN 16781, as it can allow the user to overheat. The presence of the head covering can lead to a rise in a child’s core temperature and has been associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The presence of a hood can also obstruct the user’s airways, causing them to suffocate.
