What to do now

The risk with Buttonbabblegifts Novelty Food Fridge Magnets is choking: a part can detach and fits inside a child’s airway.

  1. Remove it from the toy box or cot straight away.
  2. Check the floor and play areas for any parts that have already come off.
  3. This is a safety report rather than a manufacturer recall: the listing has been taken down, but the seller may not contact you. Get in touch with the seller through the marketplace.
  4. Report it to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer service if the seller does not respond.

Why it matters. Children under three put things in their mouths. Anything small enough to fit through a toilet-roll tube is a choking hazard for them.

Summary

Product Safety Report for Buttonbabblegifts Novelty Food Fridge Magnets presenting a medium risk of choking.

The risk

It is reasonably foreseeable that a child could confuse the magnets with the food items it was designed to imitate.

The product is capable of fitting into a small parts cylinder, presenting a choking hazard for a child under 3yrs of age.

When tested, all five of the magnets were found to have a magnetic flux index above 50 kG2mm2 and an average across the sample of 87.4 kG2mm2.

If two or more magnets are swallowed, there is a risk that the magnets become drawn to each other in the digestive system, which could cause serious injury or death if medical attention is not sought immediately.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Food Imitations (Safety) Regulations 1989.
