What to do now

Harmful bacteria have been found, or cannot be ruled out, in SMA Infant Formula and Follow-On Formula. That is enough for the business to take it off sale.

  1. Set it aside and do not use it, whatever its date.
  2. Wash your hands and any surfaces it touched.
  3. Return it to the shop where you bought it, where you should get your money back, or bin it.
  4. Check the freezer and cupboards for other packs with the same details, including anything you have decanted or portioned.

Why it matters. Bacteria such as Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus or Campylobacter can cause food poisoning. Some make toxins that survive cooking, so reheating is not a fix.

Symptoms and when to get help

Look out for

  • feeling sick or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach cramps
  • a high temperature
  • feeling generally unwell, tired or achy

Get help urgently

  • signs of dehydration, such as passing little or no pee, feeling dizzy or very thirsty
  • blood in your poo or bleeding from the bottom
  • symptoms that are not improving after a few days, or keep coming back
  • a baby, a young child, someone pregnant, someone older or someone with a weakened immune system is unwell

This is general information based on NHS public guidance, not medical advice. In an emergency call 999. For urgent advice use NHS 111 (NHS 24 on 111 in Scotland) or, in Northern Ireland, your GP or out-of-hours service.

Getting your money back

Recalled food can be returned to the shop it came from for a full refund. Supermarkets and most independent shops do this without a receipt, because the recall applies to the product, not to your purchase.

If you bought it online or on a delivery, contact the retailer through your account or customer services and tell them the product is under an FSA recall.

The risk

The presence of cereulide (toxin) in the products listed above.

Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. Cereulide is highly heat stable meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water or when making the infant milk. If consumed it can lead to rapid onset of symptoms.

Symptoms caused by this toxin include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

Even if you have not identified ill-health in your baby as a result of consumption of this product, it is essential to stop using it. If the infant formula or follow-on formula was prescribed by a health professional for your infant, consult a pharmacist or other medical professional before changing formula.

Action taken

Nestlé is recalling the above products. Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products. Please see the attached notice.

Advice to consumers

If you have bought any of the above products do not feed it to babies. Instead, share a photo of the product and the batch code via https://www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch or call the careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 for a refund. Nestlé have also added a tool to their website that will help to identify if a batch is or not under the scope of the recall. You can access this at https://www.smababy.co.uk/product-recall If you have fed this product to a baby and have any concerns about potential health impact, you should seek advice from healthcare professionals, using the most appropriate route depending on where you live, (i.e., visit your GP, call NHS111).
