What to do now
The risk with Vittoria Friarielli alla Napoletana is Clostridium botulinum, the organism that causes botulism. Illness is rare but serious, and the toxin cannot be seen, smelt or tasted.
- Do not open, taste or eat it. A swollen, leaking or hissing container is a further warning sign.
- Bag it securely, keep it away from children and pets, and wash your hands after handling it.
- Return it to the shop where you bought it, where you should get your money back, or bin it.
- Check the freezer and cupboards for other packs with the same details, including anything you have decanted or portioned.
Why it matters. Botulism is caused by a toxin that some bacteria can make in sealed, low-oxygen foods such as jars, cans, vacuum packs and oils. It does not make food look or smell spoiled.
