What to do now
The hazard with Baby Sleeping Bags sold on OnBuy is suffocation or asphyxiation.
- Stop using it now. For sleep, a baby needs a firm, flat mattress with no pillows, padding or loose items in the cot.
- Store it where children cannot reach it.
- This is a safety report rather than a manufacturer recall: the listing has been taken down, but the seller may not contact you. Get in touch with the seller through the marketplace.
- If you cannot reach the seller, Trading Standards can be told through Citizens Advice.
Why it matters. Babies cannot move away from something covering their face. Pillows, padded sleeping bags and soft items in the cot are linked to sleep deaths, and that is why many of these products fail UK safety rules.

Summary
Product Safety Report for Baby Sleeping Bags sold via OnBuy presenting a risk of asphyxiation.
The risk
These sleeping bag products present a risk of asphyxiation and overheating. The products do not incorporate arm openings and/or incorporate a hood, which may allow an infant to slip down inside the product during use. Excess fabric may then cover the infant’s nose and mouth, obstructing breathing and leading to asphyxiation. Infants are particularly vulnerable as they may be unable to remove the obstruction themselves.
OPSS has published a Product Safety Alert for Baby Sleeping Bags, which highlights the risk they may pose to babies: https://www.gov.uk/product-safety-alerts-reports-recalls/product-safety-alert-baby-sleeping-bags-psa9 .
Further information on safe sleeping for babies can be found on the NHS website at the following link: https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/baby-basics/newborn-and-baby-sleeping-advice-for-parents/safe-sleep-advice-for-babies .
