What to do now

Eclipse / Embrass Peerless Universal Circulating Pump could give an electric shock. Live parts may be reachable, or the insulation or earthing may not be good enough.

  1. Unplug it now and put it away where nobody will plug it back in.
  2. Do not open it up or try to repair it yourself.
  3. Because the product was found unsafe on an online marketplace, use the platform’s order page to contact the seller.
  4. Report it to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice consumer service if the seller does not respond.

Why it matters. Mains electricity in the UK is 230 volts, enough to cause serious injury or death. Cheap chargers, adaptors and appliances sold online are among the products most often found with this fault.

Summary

Product Safety Report for Eclipse / Embrass Peerless Universal Circulating Pump presenting a serious risk of electric shock.

The risk

The product presents a serious risk of electric shock. The mains cable can be connected to the pump in reverse, allowing the live pin to connect to the earth pin and causing accessible metal parts to become live.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016.

Action taken

Embrass Peerless have launched a replacement programme and are advising consumers who own an affected pump to conduct a visual inspection. Do not touch the pump or its housing.

Advice to consumers

An installed pump can remain in operation, but you must take care not to handle affected pumps as there is a serious risk of electrocution.

Embrass Peerless have launched a replacement programme and are advising consumers who own an affected pump to conduct a visual inspection. Do not touch the pump or its housing.

Visually inspect the mains connection to the pump. If the connection is connected so that the clip is at the bottom and connected and the three plastic lines are at the top and connecting to the “three lines” on the pump housing, then your pump is correctly installed.

If the mains connection is connected with the clip to the top, and the three lines on the bottom, your mains electrical connection is not fitted correctly. Immediately take a photograph of the pump in situ and then email to it to technical@embrasspeerless.co.uk . Installed units of the Eclipse Universal Circulating Pump should only be replaced or serviced by an approved, qualified service engineer or installer.
