What to do now

The concern with Morbier Maison Monts & Terroirs Chalet De Vevy Cheese is Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). Only a small number of these bacteria are needed to make someone ill.

  1. Do not eat it. If it is a salad or sandwich, do not try to wash or pick out the affected part.
  2. Wash hands, boards and the fridge shelf with hot soapy water after handling it.
  3. Return it to the shop where you bought it, where you should get your money back, or bin it.
  4. Check the freezer and cupboards for other packs with the same details, including anything you have decanted or portioned.

Why it matters. STEC can cause bloody diarrhoea and, in a small number of cases, a kidney complication called haemolytic uraemic syndrome, most often in young children. Washing salad leaves at home does not reliably remove it.
